Event: Data and humpback ID work

After last week's meetings, I worked with the materials in the Google Drive. I opened up all the folders to get an idea of all the data that we have to work with. There were some folders that had data that was inaccessible. The text message folder was also still empty, and I know that Liz has that data in an email, but I don't seem to have that email. I did look at the shared drives from Emma Luck and Liz which contained whale photos from 2017, 2018, and 2019. There was another 2019 folder in the main Google Drive that contained pictures of whales, so I started to identify them. When doing so I noticed a few things:

  • I was much faster at identifying whales then when the semester first started so I am able to get more done in a shorter amount of time. I also had success in identifying the black fluked ones.

Whale I was unable to identify.
  • There were still whales that I was unable to identify, one of which has distinct markings, which makes me think that it was a new sighting.

  • The folder had multiple duplicates.

  • The catalog had 3 pictures that were all labeled X107. Instead of placing all 3 photos as a separate whale, it would have been more helpful to record the dates at which the whale was seen again, or post a link to see more phots, as this clutters the catalog and makes it harder to ID whales.

Here are the 3 whales labeled as X107 in the catalog.

Overall, I am excited that I got the hang of identifying whales. I'm hoping we can go out on the boat again sometime soon. I am also looking forward to the midterm meeting so I can see how I am doing as an intern.
